Tiffany & Company said today that it would open three to five new stores yearly and could nearly double the number of its stores in the United States. Tiffany, the nation's No. 2 jewelry chain, could operate as many as 75 stores in the United States, up from 39, the chief financial officer, Jim Fernandez, said at a PaineWebber conference in New York. The company also plans to open two stores this year in Japan, adding to its 44 stores there. The retailer gets 28 percent of its total sales from Japan. Tiffany will also open stores in Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Mr. Fernandez said.
